Editor's Note: John Mearsheimer is an undoutely leaned and insighful political scientist. His political analysis also always take the view of the United States' interest disregarding its capitalist imperialist charcter. His interview here while perceptive in that he correctly argues the U.S./Israeli war against Iran has not diminished BUT INCREASED the likelihood of Islamic Republic getting nuclear weapons, is an argument that the U.S. interest is separete and apart from Israel and that Israel lobby pushed Trump to get involved and do what the Osraeli's were not able to do themselves. Thus, his analysis is from the point of interest of U.S. imperialism. At the same times, it seems to me he is putting the cart before the horse. Israel existence was in large measure due to British and U.S. imperialism policy in the Middle East. They helped the Zioists colonize and establish the State of Israel. Whatever Israel has in terms of war technology and nuclear weapons are due to the ongoing support for it by Western imperialism. One cannot seperate the powerful contributors to the Israeli lobby from those who are part of the U.S. capitalist class and political class. Thus, the U.S. govenment cannot simply put Israeli interest aside. Just think about the war both states waged against Iran. Had the Trump administration started the war he would be challeneged by some in the establishment and by the public including his base that support isolationism.
